[TUESDAY TUNEAGE] Solange Knowles’ new video for her song ‘Losing You’ was shot right here in Cape Town, South Africa.
This is what she told Pitchfork about the concept:
When Melina [Matsoukas] and I decided to film ‘Losing You’ in South Africa, we really didn’t have a real firm concept in place. It was sort of a grab a camera and let’s go moment. I knew I wanted to capture a couple things: the vibe of our friendship and all of the crazy escapades we’ve gotten ourselves into all over the world, and the abstract and elegant Le Sape Society (Society for the Advancement of People of Elegance) formed in the Congo which was documented by Daniele Tamagni in his Gentleman of Bacongo book. We called Daniele to guide us, and some of my friends from New York came down to Cape Town and we all had a very damn good time.”
I always have such Intense Feelings about ‘poverty porn’ and think the Le Sape Society concept is well executed, but what about South African subcultures?
Anyways, let me reserve my Opinions. The video’s cute, I love the cameos by familiar faces such as ELLE Fashion Editor Asanda Sizani, and this will probably be my summer jam.

[WHEN J MEETS SOLO] You don’t have to be a genius or have a particularly high level of reading comprehension acumen to understand how much I love Miss Solange Knowles. You just have to have a functional internet connection and be able to browse this here blog.
So you an understand how much I’m geeking out over the fact that my former employer, ELLE South Africa, has brought Miss Knowles to SA. A lot. That’s how much I’m geeking out.
Because we live in this time of rampant narcissism, I’ve decided to go on a one person crusade to get ELLE to organise a meet & greet with Solange for yours truly.
Why should ELLE go to all this trouble?
I’m glad you asked, because I’ve prepared a list right here:
1. I used to work there and I made quite a wonderful contribution to the mag, even if I have to say so myself.
2. I am a known - and respected - Solange fan.
3. I have a great, engaged, wonderful online (and IRL) following, so if ELLE arranges this, it’ll be a huge #BrandPlus for them.
4. See point 3. The internet is basically a collection of ‘cool points’. There really are zero negatives that I can think of, in this scenario.
5. I’d just really like to meet her, so there….
C’mon ELLE, the ball’s in your court.

![Solange Knowles plays a game of ‘Would you rather…?’ with the good people over at Complex magazine:
I’d rather be submissive than dominant. Strong, independent women share this sentiment of wanting to be taken over sexually behind closed doors. It’s the natural balance for a woman like me.
I’d rather live in the U.S. than Europe. I talk shit about the American way, and how much more together Europe is as a society, but traveling as much as I have, there are lots of things I appreciate about home. I plan on living in Europe at some point, but for now I’m good in Brooklyn.
I’d rather be on the cast of Love & Hip-Hop than Project Runway. I’ve never seen Project Runway, but I’m a huge Chrissy [Love & Hip-Hop star Christine Lampkin] fan. I’d need to take boxing lessons from her first though, nahmean?
I’d rather be the cool aunt than the authoritative aunt. The closer my sister came to motherhood, the more stern she was with my son, Julez, but when he was between the ages of 1 and 4, she put the s in spoiling. I had to deal with the cool aunt for seven years, and I’m ready for payback! Late nights, candy binges—I’m doing it all!
I’d rather have known my parents when they were younger than only know them as my parents. My mother was the most stylish, flawless woman I’ve ever seen. My father had a little cool, but my mother was a different breed of cool. I’ve looked through photographs of her that inspire me today. She’s partied at Studio 54, hung out in ski chalets in Colorado, and played Cleopatra in a play in Egypt. She’s insanely cool in her 50s, but I wouldn’t pass up being with her in her prime!
I’d rather be the protector than the protected. I’m naturally the protector—being a mother and having a famous family. You have to navigate when it’s right to protect. I’ve made mistakes, but just know, if you step to me and mine, me and Chrissy gon’ have to fuck you up.
