[FASHION] From runway to reality

Look what dropped into the office yesterday … These pretties from Abigail Betz’s Autumn/ Winter collection. Fresh off the runway! Wowza!

It took three weeks to bead that skirt. Truly, a thing of wonder.

And then who can forget this Kluk CGDT that Lira wore on the February 2011 Fairlady magazine cover? I think she wore it better than the model #Hides.

[JFW Day 1] Kluk CGDT

The dynamic design duo (see what I did there?) of Malcolm Kluk and Christiaan Gabriel Du Toit delivered a stunning show at the Randclub in JHB. In a word? SUMPTIOUS! ELLE Fashion Director Chris Viljoen had this to say about last night’s spectacle:

To the design duo this collection truly showed off what they love and thereby became a fashion adventure for them and for us. Christian and Malcolm love opulent fabric, which was seen throughout the collection, they love hunting for something special and unique, which was especially evident in the look below – the amazing Afghan embroidered fabric that Christian and Malcolm used was found covered in mud and in much need of regeneration and care. They also love to travel, hence the Indian and Chinese influences. And even though the collection portrays the designers’ loves, they still acknowledge and know their customer: she loves to dress up so this is, of course, taken into consideration when designing, they want to give her what she wants and loves, in a new and fresh way.

Before Christian and Malcolm even started designing they knew they wanted to show at The Rand Club. Inspired by the interior, they then designed the collection focusing on the luxurious and opulent surroundings, enhancing the entire fashion adventure and experience for all of us, the designers and their customers. As Malcolm said, “Clothing is something you wear every day, while fashion is about the experience”.

Some of my favourite looks… Behold:

[JFW Day 1] Behind the velvet curtains. Sorta.

Suzaan Heyns’s show wasn’t just about beautiful clothes. She even took the braids to the eyebrows - and I friggen hearted it.

In ‘The September Issue’, Grace Coddington said she thinks she’s the only fashion editor left in the world who still dresses models. Ok, (1) she’s clearly never worked in South Africa and (2) those who think the ‘higher ups’ in fashion are too posh to get their hands dirty clearly haven’t been backstage at fashion week. Here are the masters (Christiaan and Malcolm) at work:

We <heart> this city

This year’s AFI JHB Fashion Week (autumn/ winter collections) is set to take to the streets of Joburg. That’s right, they’re moving away from the stuffy Sandton Convention Centre and exploring this beautiful, vibrant, dynamic city.

Last night I attended the official media launch at Randlords where it was revealed that the fashion showcase will have different iconic venues - from Fashion Kapitol to the Nelson Mandela Bridge. Can. Not. Wait.

Seen at last night’s media launch:

Malcolm Kluk and Christian Gabriel du Toit.

Mpho, Tebogo and Tshepo Lerole (Kwela Tebza).

Aspassia Karras and Noni Gasa.

Thula Sindi.

DJ Zinhle and friend.
