So tell me how you really feel?
A wise man Thula Sindi, tweeted: ‘The trick is not to get carried away, especially when airing an opinion about someone who got carried away airing their opinion’.
Today, I did just that. As you know, today was ‘Kuli Roberts Controversy’ day and I spent most of yesterday and today ignoring the whole thing. I read the column early yesterday and my intial reaction was to...

[SELF-REFERENTIAL] Man of Cloth!
Mika and I made it onto Man of Cloth. Nice meeting you, Marco!
I think men are waiting it out until I lose my looks & vivacity. Then they’ll swoop in & wanna date me, thinking I’ll be lower maintenance

Conversations that actually happen in my life...
Disclaimer: I’m suffering from severe loser syndrome today or is that late onset PMS? so I’m not in the best frame of mind right now.
In today’s edition of ‘Conversations that actually happen in my life’, I’m going to address the oft asked ‘Why are you still single?™’ question.
Generally, the ‘Why are you still single?™’ is prefaced by some or...

Oscar Pistorius for Thierry Mugler A*Men
I’m a huge Thierry Mugler fragrance fan (my top two scents are Alien and Alien Sunessence, so like, duh!). Which means I was doubly pleased when I heard that our very own Oscar Pistorius is the new face of A*Men.
Here are some pictures from the ad, which you can see on the Thierry Mugler site. Oscar’s such a hottie. Sigh.

[FASHION] Oscars red carpet, my top five
How disappointing was this year’s Academy Awards red carpet? I feel like I’m reaching by naming a top five. Tjo! Anyways, here are my picks:
1. Mila Kunis in Elie Saab
She’s been so consistent this awards season! And, even though I’ve gotten used to seeing her in bold colour, the pastel works for her. Very glam and, as usual, great over all styling.
2. Natalie Portman...
RT @MikaStefano: #epicfail Vixens. Its like an episode of the children of yotv, tryna act like girls of the playboy mansion, w/ JCLeRoux
So good meeting you :) RT @MarthaShiloane: janine_j and Mokgads! Hot! Hot! Hot! Tjo! * hand over mouth*

Lira in concert? Oh, hell yeah!
Yay! Miss Lira’s launching her new album, Return to Love, in style with two shows on 3rd and 4th of March at the Mardi Gras Theatre, Carnival City.
Lira calls her latest album her ‘best body of work yet’. ‘With Return to Love, I feel we have unmistakably defined the Lira sound and I feel confident enough to share it with the world after the South African launch,’...

[BLOG LOVE] Pretty 24/7
I might be a tad biased, given that I know Shannon Smith from our Fairlady magazine days, but I’m enjoying Pretty 24/7 sooo much.
My love of beauty products is well documented, so no wonder I adore the site, right? Pretty 24/7 is an independent, beauty-focused website, run by editors Shannon and Daniela Massenz and a cluster of leading industry professionals.
You can expect everything...

[MAG FAB] B's a Style Star, baby!
I mentioned it a bit earlier this week, but once again, major props to Bonang on her Seventeen cover! As I said, this is a perfect brand match.
Bonang’s a young woman on the rise and, if I had a kid sister, I would not mind her looking up to Bonang - she’s hard working, professional and has never been less than a lady in my dealings with her.
Whenever I hear bitter Bonang hate, I...
So do you!!! RT @Zah_SA: janine_j Great seeing you last night. Always looking good!

The crush killing tweet
Eish, Kanye. Smdh. I loved you oh so much and then you just had to go and tweet this:
I don’t know where to start. How’s about you strap up or, I don’t know, be more discerning about choosing your sexual partners or, if you really don’t want to be blackmailed by these alleged golddigging abortionists, have a vasectomy?
Last time I checked, women don’t impregnate...

[DAY JOB] 'Mama, I made it!'
Surreal. There I am, on the top floor of Sandton’s new Radisson hotel, faced by two portly men (both old enough to be my father), vying for my attention, each promising ever more lavish gifts.
‘St Tropez of Monaco?’ asks Mr. Silk-Shirt-and-White-Linen-Pants.
‘This man can’t stamp your passport,’ countered Mr Gleaming-Rolex, holding his pungent cigar away from my face.
All talk.
A few tables...

[SAFW] SA Fashion Week summer collections schedule
Bonang Matheba sizzles in a Gert Johan Coetzee dress. Gert is set to show at SA Fashion Week in April.
I’ve barely recovered from Joburg Fashion Week and look what pops into my inbox: the schedule for the South African Fashion Week summer collections.
From the press release:
SA Fashion Week’s Summer Collections are set to SHINE at the newly refurbished glassed-in Shine Studio which...

[FASHION] Respect their hustle. Damn right!
I’m not going to pretend I’m a jeans-tee-sneakers kinda girl, but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the look. And few are doing streetwear as well as the hotties over at Head Honcho.
The growing clothing label got much deserved props when it showed at Johannesburg Fashion Week’s Fasttrack Day (the day before day one). I wasn’t invited *flips imaginary...

[BEAUTY REVIEW] Pyramid Day Spa
I’d heard so many great things about Pyramid Day Spa from the likes of Mokgadi and Mika that when Patrick (the MD) invited me for an afternoon of pampering, there was no way I could turn him down.
So, last Friday, I made my way to Selby (close to the Joburg CBD) and discovered this amazing place.
First clue that I was in for an afternoon of sublime pampering: running into Miss Khanyi...
No doubt! Everyone in? RT @uLoner janine_j @Mokgads @Khensiwensie @Kabelo_C Are you ladies going to Analogue Nites on Thursday?

[BEAUTY SPOT] Top looks from NY Fashion Week
I haven’t really been paying much attention to New York fashion week, been a bit busy with Joburg’s one. Luckily, New York magazine posted a blog about the top beauty looks from the shows and here are my favourite favourites:
Tuxedo nails as seen at the Ruffian show.
Cat’s eyes as seen at Ports 1961 and beehives at Ivana Helsinki.
What a braid! As seen at the Alexandre...

[FASHION] From runway to reality (again)
Let’s ignore the fact that I’m looking a mess without make up… Thula Sindi’s pretty autumn/ winter collection pieces landed in the ELLE office and, given that I’m so tjatjarag, I couldn’t wait to slip on that blue skirt.
It is absolutely gorgeous, but extremely heavy and I could barely breathe. Think it’s time for me to dig out the running shoes again.

[FASHION] From runway to reality
Look what dropped into the office yesterday … These pretties from Abigail Betz’s Autumn/ Winter collection. Fresh off the runway! Wowza!
It took three weeks to bead that skirt. Truly, a thing of wonder.
And then who can forget this Kluk CGDT that Lira wore on the February 2011 Fairlady magazine cover? I think she wore it better than the model #Hides.

TOM, The Piper's Son: Wanderlust →
Beautiful. Sigh. Makes me want to pack my bags…
thepipersson:
Wanderlust (it works better in the German) is that memory of a place you’ve never been before, catching you unaware, you know? Like the smell of roasting coffee beans on a cold Zagreb morning; the chirrup-chirrup of some as unseen bird in the canopy of a South American tropical forest….

[JFW Day 4] David Tlale, part two
Big Brother Africa’s Lerato Sengadi looked phenomenal in this number. This colour, the draping… Girl, you need to buy this dress!
Now let’s look at some of the celebs who did their little turn on the catwalk:
Bold and the Beautiful’s Jacqueline MacInnes Wood.
Gerry Rantseli-Elsdon, who never seems to age.
The gorgeous Joan Ramagoshi. Gosh, she looks better and...

[JFW Day 4] David Tlale, part one
Now that I’ve had my (lengthy) say, let’s get on with the business of gawking at clothes. David started us off with this beautiful red story- the flowing fabric, the cuts, the print, I loved it wholeheartedly. This is classic and contemporary at its best:
Next up, it was the plaid-ish shifts and coats, which were also yumlicious:
I loved these pieces, as well. The...

[JFW Day 4] Dear David,
I hope you’ve fully recovered from the early hours of Sunday morning … Rad after party, by the way, Hush was pumping.
David, can I be frank with you? I’ve followed your career with interest and, for years, I just didn’t get it. Maybe I’m too much of a fashion pleb, but while I could see the potential and creativity, I was never floored. I was the girl in the front row, looking on...

[JFW Day 3] Thula Sindi
I’ve already mentioned this show here and here and here and here. Overkill, much? Yes, maybe. Sue me, I love Thula.
This autumn/winter collection draws inspiration from the ‘super woman’ who juggles roles: mother, wife, career woman. Basically, the everywoman like you and I.
While I didn’t luuuurrrveee everything, I loved most of it. Here are my greatest hits.

[JFW Day 3] Stiaan Louw
Me, some dude, Mika and another dude at the Joburg Art Gallery before the show.
Forgive me for jumping back and forth between fashion week days, I’m suffering from severe fashion fatigue over here.
Friday night, for Day 3, I headed over to the Johannesburg Art Gallery for the Stiaan Louw/ Thula Sindi shows.

[JFW Day 4] Random pics from Nelson Mandela Bridge...
Mokgadi, Khensani and me. Isn’t Khensi’s fuchsia clutch a joy?
I don’t know if it was the anticipation or the cold, but all of my pictures were a shaky, unfocused mess. Please forgive me. But at least you’ll be able to get the general vaaib of what went down.
We were seated close to these fantastic folk - Miss Sunshine Shibambo, Miss Thembisa Mdoda and Mr Dumi Gwebu.
